An innovative mining method termed "spiral slot-and-chamber mining with backfill" has been conceptualized as a possible alternative to room-and-pillar mining. It is a total extraction method applied to nearly horizontal, strata-bound ore deposits. Conventional methods of mining tabular deposits extract ore from panels laid out in a rectilinear pattern. It may be possible to transform this layout into a curvalinear one so that one continuous panel, along a spiral, is mined. There are several benefits of the spiral pattern of mining. This paper discusses the novel mining method and a feasibility study proposed to the U.S. Bureau of Mines.
