Abstract
This U.S. Bureau of Mines handbook presents guidelines for preventing methane gas explosions during tunnel construction. It conveys technology and practice from the coal mining industry, which has been safely dealing with methane gas emissions for many years. Emphasis is placed on assessing the hazard potential, on ventilation principles, on monitoring for gas, and on what can go wrong in practice.
