In the fall of 1985, the U.S. Bureau of Mines and the University of Missouri-Rolla began a research project to develop an expert system consultant for applications in research and development of mica beneficiation. This consultant would be used both as an aid in the design of mica beneficiation plants and as a tutorial tool. The system could also serve as a model for research in a large area of mineral beneficiation. The expert system consultant would provide the following recommendations for an ore body: usability of the nonmica minerals present in the ore, feasible end uses for the mica, concentration treatments for the mica, equipment configurations, parameter settings for concentration treatment circuits, and fine tuning the treatment circuits. To date, a prototype consultant has been developed that provides the first three of these recommendations. This paper describes the prototype system and discusses its continuing development.
