This U.S. Bureau of Mines study indicates that there are major advantages in using water-jet-assisted cutting for dust control. Maximum benefit is achieved at pressures between 2,000 and 3,000 lb/in2 with no increase in normal water flowrate. Use of water-jet- assisted cutting increases bit life by keeping the bit tip cooler. Improving bit life reduces the number of times new bits must be installed, and this is particularly important during cutting in very hard and abrasive rocks.
