Abstract
Catalysts for the preparation of methyl alcohol by hydrogenation of CO and/or co2 were prepared from alloys of cu with rare-earth, actinide, or group IVB metals. The alloys were oxidized so that the non-cu elements were converted to oxides. Thus, a powdered alloy containing 42.2 Wt pct th and 57.8 Wt pct cu was oxidized at 400 deg c in air for 22 h to give a mixture containing tho2, cu2o, cuo, and cu, which after use contained tho2 and cu.
