This paper describes a ground support system developed by the Bureau of Mines for use with an underground coal auger. The system consists of inflatable airbags that are inserted in the holes as they are drilled, and then gradually deflated to provide controlled roof caving. Laboratory and field tests of the system show it to be technically feasible.
