Abstract
This paper describes a research base, composed of a specially instrumented Joy 16 cm mining machine and a Bureau of Mines integrated computer system, developed for performing a variety of autonomous mining machine experiments. Initial tests with this base have been completed and have proven that accurate control of the machine, in both free space and a simulated coal seam, can be accomplished with open- and closed-loop software algorithms. The computer, the software, the control mode, and the test results are described.
