This paper describes an investigation to determine a means to mechanically extract hard rock that would be more efficient and better lend itself to modern remote control methods than the currently favored drill-blast technique. Various existing equipment such as tunnel boring machines, roadheaders, continuous coal miners, raise borers, impactors, saws, ripper cutters, and rotary drills were compared, and it was found that only ripper cutting could fragment hard rock economically enough to compete with drill- blasting.
