This paper describes a study to measure the metabolic demands of building a roof support cribbing, moving 50-lb rock dust bags, and building a brattice. Subjects at the University of Kentucky performed these tasks in a low-seam mine simulator while wearing full mining gear except for hard hats, which were replaced by respiratory valve headsets. Continuous readings were recorded before, during, and after the performance of these tasks.
