The vapor-liquid equilibria of the aluminum chloride-titanium tetrachloride system.

As part of an overall investigation of the possibility of using domestic clay to produce aluminum via an energy saving chloride process, the Bureau of Mines has determined vapor-liquid equilibria for the system aluminum chloride-titanium tetrachloride. The system was studied over the entire composition range and at temperatures of 187 deg. to 217 deg. C in sealed vessels such that the total pressures were not known. Results indicate two azeotropes cf approximately 20 and 95 wt pct aluminum chloride. These findings suggest difficulties in distillation separation of these two products of clay chlorination.
