Extraction of Palladium(II) Using Cyanex 471 Extractant and Supported Liquid Membrane.

The purpose of this report is to describe the recovery of palladium from spent automotive palladium-platinum catalysts. A type of liquid membrane separation process for the separation and concentration of metals--supported liquid membrane--was used to separate and concentrate very low concentrations of palladium(II) in hydrochloric acid solution against its concentration gradient. Using cyanex 471 as the carrier and to clarify the permeation mechanism of palladium through the membrane, the separation of dilute solutions of palladium(II) chloride was carried out by (1) liquid-liquid extraction and (2) the use of supported liquid membrane containing the mobile carrier. In both cases, the operating conditions were varied so that the effect of such variables as hcl concentration, cyanex 471 concentration, stripping agent concentration, temperature, palladium concentration, and platinum(IV) addition to the feed solution could be studied.
