Abstract
The Bureau of Mines has developed a system for dewatering waste slurries by flocculating mineral particles with polyethylene oxide (peo) and dewatering the resulting flocs on static and/or rotary screens. This paper discusses data obtained from dewatering, rheology, and ion-exchange experiments. A possible mechanism is postulated for the attachment of peo to claylike particles through a water bridge with the intershell waters of the exchanged ion and the polymer.
