Update on the Evaluation of Diesel Particulate Filters for Underground Mining.

Results of a laboratory assessment of catalyzed ceramic diesel particulate filters (dpf's) are reported. Catalyzed dpf's are shown to substantially reduce diesel particulate emissions, carbon monoxide, and gaseous hydrocarbons, as well as particulate ignition temperatures. Sulfate production is discussed in relation to sulfates presently emitted into the mine environment. Field experience is reported on the application of the ceramic dpf to control diesel particulate emitted from underground diesel-powered vehicles. The vehicle has been operated in mine production service over typical load-haul-dump duty cycles. Field tests have been carried out using the filters assisted with both fuel additive and precious metal catalyst coating techniques. The structural integrity of the filter appears satisfactory with approximately 250 hours of field experience. Both manganese fuel additive and precious metal catalyst coating were shown to provide satisfactory regeneration assist. Exhaust backpressures over a 250-hour test were lower than the original exhaust system comprising an exhaust catalytic purifier and muffler in series.
