An outburst in a coal mine environment is the rapid ejection of coal and gas from the face. Outbursts are caused by a combination of high coalbed gas pressure and structural stress, created by the load placed upon mine workings by overburden. A review of the outburst problem in general is followed by a presentation of prediction and prevention techniques employed worldwide to mitigate outbursts.
