As part of a Bureau of Mines program, four limited bulk water spray coolers were designed and built. The first of these coolers, a single-stage unit, was tested in the Mt. Taylor Mine near Grants, New Mexico, before it closed. The remaining three coolers, a two-stage cooler and two three-stage coolers, were installed in the Homestake Gold Mine in Lead, South Dakota. To date, all the coolers have performed well under in-mine conditions and have required only minimal maintenance. This paper details the design and performance of these coolers.
