Abstract
The Bureau of Mines research program related to miner safety is divided into two principal areas: health and safety, and mining technology. Both programs address coal as well as metal and nonmetal problems, but this paper is limited to the safety research aspects of coal mining. By way of background, the health and safety program addresses problems in underground and surface mines and the surface facilities associated with those mines. The mining technology program focuses on problems relative to reducing the environmental impact of mining or past mining activities, and on problems of mine productivity and resource recovery. The emphasis of this paper will be directed toward recent accomplishments that are or will be available to industry in the near future.
