Abstract
A program involving the cogeneration of power from incoming mine cooling water is being sponsored by the Bureau of Mines at the Lucky Friday Mine in northern Idaho. By U.S. standards, the Lucky Friday is a deep mine. The mine is equipped with 500 short tons of refrigeration capacity to service active underground workings. Using a turbine generator, the energy recovered from approximately 500 gal/min of cooling water piped from the surface to the 850 m level is now producing about 200 kw of electrical power at an overall system efficiency of 77%.
