The Application of Underground Mining Practices to Tunneling in Gassy Conditions.
Ch 29 in Proc 1985 :482-487
The Bureau of Mines, in conjunction with the mining industry, over the past century has developed many techniques to safely handle the methane gas associated with the extraction of coal. The techniques include the detection and quantification of gas prior to mining, degasification of drainage (including predrainage from vertical and horizontal boreholes), and ventilation practices, all of which can readily be adopted by the tunneling industry.
