A rock mass classification system was developed for support estimation in mines using block caving methods. The developed system accepts readily obtainable geotechnical properties and mining geometry to develop a rating that permits recommendations for drift support in block caving mines. The method is intended to be used for planning and estimating purposes and for preliminary support design. This report explains the organization and nature of the system, its derivations, details of required input data, methods for assessing the data and for developing rock mass ratings, and techniques for selecting the most appropriate mine support recognizing mine requirements and desired stability. A worked example is provided.
