Abstract
The methane content of coalbeds can be measured prior to mining by using a simple Bureau of Mines technique called the "direct method." Coal cores from exploration drilling are enclosed in an airtight canister when the core barrel is brought to the surface. Methane emitted into the canister from the coal core is used to calculate coalbed gas content.
