Substitution of Platinum Metal Crucibles Used in the Glass Industry.
NTIS: PB/85-106888 :56 pages
A research and development study was conducted wherein commercial tin oxide (sNO2) was evaluated as crucible material for melting optical-quality glasses. Several sintering aids for sNO2 were examined. Laboratory-scale sNO2 crucibles were fabricated by dry pressing, slip casting, and isostatic pressing processes. Corrosion resistance, surface characteristics, and the forming process itself were evaluated using the scanning electron microscopy technique.
