Placement and Evaluation of High-modules Backfill.

Previous work indicates that hydraulically placed backfill can be strengthened severalfold by various placement methods. Sunshine mill tailings were tested by these placement methods and strength increases up to 30 times over the ordinary placement methods were achieved. A computer simulation study of the test stope in the sunshine mine showed that a high-modulus fill absorbs up to 27 pct of normal stresses versus 7 pct for normal fill while reducing maximum convergence 28 pct versus 8 pct for normal fill. Although high-modulus fill was not placed in the test stope during this research, various instrumentation was purchased, designed, and built to record necessary data in the stope. Stress gauges were placed in the pillars and recorded data corresponded closely with theoretical projections.
