Abstract
Technology to develop high-pressure gas cylinders that are 40 pct lighter than comparable fiberglass-wrapped aluminum cylinders was developed. The new cylinders were of cryobulged stainless steel overwrapped with a higher strength-to-weight ratio filament. Although a 40-pct decrease is significant, the weight savings on smaller cylinders, such as those used in escape apparatus, is very small and would not be cost effective. Open-circuit apparatus that use large bottles, such as for firefighting, would find weight savings worth pursuing.
