The development and analysis of highly productive haulage systems for the anthracite industry in eastern Pennsylvania was completed in this work. A literature survey and field survey were completed for 10 haulage systems. A site scenario was developed for two mine sizes in eastern Schuylkill County, Pennsylvania. The analysis showed a combined system, using rail cars and skip hoists (rail-hoist), to be the only viable alternative to a truck haulage system. The rail- hoist system provided variable cost savings for capital investment and operating costs, depending on the projected size of the mine.
