The Bureau of Mines, U.S. Department of the Interior, is conducting research on methods for the rapid identification and sorting of mixed metal scrap so that domestic scrap resources can be utilized more fully. Initial studies include a technical assessment of available identification methods and of their current or potential use for various scrap sorting problems. Methods investigated were thermoelectric, spectroscopic, and x-ray measurements. A survey of these techniques is presented, with data showing applications to specific scrap identification systems.
