Improved Crowd Limit Switches and Greenhorn for Electric Shovels.

The objective of this research was to develop and demonstrate appropriate system hardware for electric mining shovels that will prevent damage and downtime resulting from the shovel operator overextending the dipper handles when digging. The improved greenhorn is designed to absorb the maximum energy generated by the greenhorn impacting the shipper shaft at maximum velocity with a loaded dipper. The crowd limit control system senses the location of the dipper by counting the teeth of the pinion gear that drives the dipper handle and makes appropriate commands to the crowd motor to prevent greenhorn and shipper shaft collision.
