Abstract
Research was conducted to develop methodology for evaluating candidate potting materials intended for use in explosion-proof enclosures. The primary purpose was to develop acceptance guidelines based on arc decomposition products. Acceptance criteria can be based on (1) inherent thermochemophysical, mechanical, and electrical properties; (2) arc decomposition products (nature of volatile products produced; e.g., flammability, explosivity, synergistic effects on existing environment in the enclosure, and toxicity; and quantity produced as a function of arc power and duration); and (3) acceleration aging tests to evaluate breakdown under electrical stress.
