Abstract
The correlation between depth of cut and dust generation has been established in laboratory and test fields that have been conducted in the United States and abroad for a number of years. This article describes a recent testing program that has proved the benefits associated with deep and slow cutting on a U.S. longwall face. The tests showed that respirable dust from longwall mining can be significantly reduced without adversely affecting production by simply increasing the depth of cut of the shearer.
