Development of a Personal Co2 Detector, and a Ch4 Detector.

This report describes four handheld co2 detectors and three handheld ch4 detectors that were designed and manufactured for in-mine safety use. The detectors incorporated an optical-electronic analyzer design in which exceptional zero stability is achieved by pressure modulation of the sample gas and thus eliminating the need for daily calibration. The stability and miniature design of the co2 and ch4 detectors provide practical instruments suitable for routine safety inspections. The report includes the theory and design of the instruments as well as studies of gas-pressure modulation by a piezo- ceramic-driven resonator.
