NTIS: PB/266-787 Available for Reference At Bureau Libraries :158 pages
An overall summary and the individual reports from 19 workshops that were conducted to identify and rank mining research and development needs are presented in this two-volume report. At each of eight workshops a summary of current Bureau of Mines mine reclamation research was presented along with identification of problems associated with mine land reclamation in the state where the meeting was being held. Discussions included the seriousness of problems locally and how the Bureau could best undertake research to assist the state in solving the problems identified. Participants included representatives of state agencies, educational institutions, and companies involved in surface mining. Major points that should be considered in the formulation of research and development efforts and new regulatory procedures by the federal government included the following: all states visited, except Alaska, have reclamation laws and functioning enforcement agencies that serve the interest of each state. Physical conditions in the individual states are the controlling factors on reclamation practices.
