Abstract
Experimental mining of oil shale, to date, has been conducted only in the shallow mahogany zone and only the room and pillar mining method has been used. The federal Bureau of Mines is planning a demonstration mine in the deep, thick oil shale deposits in Colorado. This paper describes four mining concepts that are planned for demonstration and the interrelationship of these concepts and the environment. The environmental aspects of oil shale development are also discussed.
