This study was conducted to (1) examine a representative sample of surface openings to abandoned and inactive underground mines in the Black Hills, (2) to identify those openings of the sample that are a public hazard, (3) to design low cost protection to eliminate the hazard, and (4) to analyze laws and regulations pertaining to associated hazard elimination and jurisdictional and enforcement problems. Volume III contains Appendix C, "abandoned mine identification areas b, c, and d."
