The purpose of this paper is to present an overview of soft-ground tunneling equipment and techniques that are in common use today. It is intended as an introduction to the subject for persons not specifically associated with soft-ground tunneling. As an introductory paper, only the most common tunneling methods are described; new or little used methods are not discussed. Finally, this paper will not cover machine tunneling in hard rock or other tunnel construction techniques such as cut and cover, sunken tube, or pipe jacking.
