A series of 41 blasting accidents that caused 8 fatalities and 37 injuries in metal and nonmetal mines during 1975-76 were analyzed. The three leading causes of accidents were improper safety fuse blasting procedures, drilling into bootlegs or misfires, and improper shot guarding or inadequate cover taken by the blasting crew. The article is based on Mining Enforcement and Safety Administration (MESA) accident reports. The accidents are categorized and described briefly. Violations of MESA regulations that led to the accidents are covered and corrective measures are recommended.
