There are many potential hazards associated with surface blasting procedures that are not documented to a degree sufficient for the development and promulgation of safety standards. In addition, there are many operations where safer methods might be devised. The purpose of this program is to identify and document commonly used surface blasting practices and evaluate them in terms of their potential hazards with the objective of improving safety through the development of guidelines for safer blasting procedures in surface mining.
