This report presents the findings of a study aimed at documenting operational problems associated with the one surface mining of coal dipping 8 deg to 25 deg. Based on an intense literature search and field investigations, new extraction concepts were generated as a means to alleviate these problems. Also contained in the report is a detailed characterization of moderately pitching coal seams found within the United States.
