Progress in the three areas of over- and short-circuit protection, cable ampacity research, and cable couplers are discussed. Many facts related to circuit breaker settings and cable sizes depends on the duty-cycle current determined by a particular piece of equipment, but the actual selection of the cable to be used is often a function of the maximum allowable circuit breaker instantaneous settings as specified in title 30. To avoid nuisance trippings as a result of instantaneous starting, current field, laboratory, and analytical studies are being conducted to determine proper settings and cable sizes. Also, an extensive program has been established to monitor the performance of high-voltage cable couplers and determine their modes of failure. Various equipment are being designed for laboratory testing, and an extensive reeled cable experiment is underway.
