Development and Design of a Mine Roof Simulator.

This report provides an engineering design for a coal mine roof simulator for research and testing of artificial roof supports used in longwall coal mining. Various configurations were investigated resulting in a final design incorporating a three-platen force applicator to simulate mine roof loading. Each platen is designed for a 2-million-pound compressive force and a 250,000-pound shearing force. The basic configuration simulated displacement of mine roof in four degrees of freedom: vertical, lateral, tilt, and twist.
