The Application of Polymers for Rock Bonding and Reinforcement of Coal Mine Structures.

This research was undertaken to select polymeric materials suitable for use in coal mines to bond cracks, voids, and fissures in the roof and to function as a permanent support. No one material was found to satisfy all the requirements, but existing materials were modified to provide reasonable viscosities, gel and cure times, strength, and elongation. One modified epoxy resin system developed under this grant has been approved for use in underground coal mines and was successfully field tested in a West Virginia coal mine.
