NTIS: PB/212-746/2 Available for Reference At Bureau Libraries :131 pages
The purpose of this study was to provide guidelines for meaningful research leading toward improved drilling devices and techniques. The evaluation of the technology indicates clearly that those techniques now in use by the Bureau of Mines represent the most advanced state of the art currently available for the Bureau's purposes and conditions. It also shows that much of the advance in the current state of the art in technology has been the result of the Bureau's activities. It indicates that further advances can and should be reached through research by the Bureau and provides guidance for such activity. The first section describes the conditions under which a drill must work. The second section discusses the state of the art of drilling as it relates to the problem. The third section describes the problem.
