Abstract
The formation of carbon monoxide and other gases by various American coals was investigated to determine their relevance to spontaneous heating and to the problem of incipient fire detection. The sensitivity and reliability of combustion product sensors as mine fire detectors were investigated with heated coal samples in flowing air.
