This program (Contract No. H0111386) studies the adequacy of existing regulations as they relate to the hazards of fires on mining machinery. The report includes conclusions and recommendations relative to specific sections of the Coal Mine Health and Safety Act of 1969. Also included in the report are a review of prior fire experience since 1952, a survey of machine and in-mine influences, a review of fire detection and suppression systems, the results of extinguishment testing of typical fires in mine machinery, and a special study of the flammabilities of electric cable.
