Investigating the Fundamental Chemistry of Flames With Molecular Beam Mass Spectrometry.

This paper presents an experimental system consisting of three components whose design and characteristics depends in detail on the processes studied and the information desired. The system is comprised of the combustion source, the molecular beam sampling train, and the instrumentation for the detection and analysis of the molecular beam. Some general comments on the requirements of each component are followed by a more detailed description of the apparatus used in the laboratory. Results taken with this apparatus are used as examples in the subsequent discussion.
