NTIS: PB/244-684 :67 pages
The primary objective of this contract was the design, development, and demonstration of a dust collecting system for auger head miners, used in coal seams 40 inches or less in height, that would reduce respirable dust levels below 2.0 Mg/m3. A Wilcox Mark 20 mining machine was modified to include exhaust fans that draw dusty air from the front part of the machine. A donaldson dust collector was installed in the front part of the machine, with 18-inch exhaust tubing conducting the effluent air directly into the return. With the scrubber installed, respirable dust levels were reduced from 60 to 70 pct throughout the section; however, the average at the high- risk occupation was still slightly greater than 2.0 Mg/m3. The noise levels were not decreased; however, they were not increased.
