Instruments and Techniques for Dynamic Particle Size Measurement of Coal Dust.

The objective of this research was to develop instruments and techniques for measuring the size distribution and mass concentration of respirable coal dust in the laboratory and the field. The system developed for use in the laboratory employs both electrical mobility and light-scattering sensors to yield immediate size distribution data for airborne dusts in the size range from 0.005 to 20 micrometers. A battery-operated, portable system using a light-scattering sensor was developed for measuring dust distributions in underground and other field operations. A mass concentration device, which uses a quartz crystal sensor, was tested but found to be inconsistent.
