Development of an Area Sampling Methodology.

An extensive experimental program was carried out to determine the variability of respirable dust samplers and to determine whether area dust sampling is feasible in coal mines. For sampler variability, under laboratory conditions, a single dust measurement could be as much as 0.30 Mg/m3 from the true value of the 95 pct confidence level. Under actual underground mining operations, this difference could be as much as 0.52 Mg/m3 in the 0 to 5.0 Mg/m3 range. The results from dust sampling on 175 production shifts involving over 2,500 on-worker and area dust samples showed that area sampling is viable, but the field investigation did not establish necessarily where the best area locations were.
