NIOSH testimony on respiratory protection by R. W. Niemeier, May 15, 1995.
NIOSH 1995 May; :1-11
This testimony summarized information and comments from NIOSH regarding the proposed rule on the use of respiratory protection. Regarding scope and application, NIOSH suggests that OSHA adequately describes employer responsibilities but suggests that OSHA consider adding a paragraph regarding the voluntary use of respirators. Information is provided on definitions, including fit check, fit factor, quantitative fit test, and qualitative fit test. The NIOSH views on assigned protection factors, aerosol size criterion, immediately dangerous to life and health values, oxygen deficient atmospheres, chemical contaminant atmospheres, respirator fit testing, medical evaluation criteria, the reuse of disposable respirators, beards and respirators, contact lenses and respirators and the selection of powered air purifying respirators are each discussed.
