Embedded performance measures as teaching and assessment sevices.

The role of embedded tests as teaching and assessment devices within continuing education courses designed for occupational safety and health (OSH) personnel was examined. Issues related to mandatory training and short courses were addressed, and included a discussion on National Science Foundation supported studies on the effectiveness of these programs with engineers and scientists, which was thought to be adaptable to the OSH area. Embedded performance measures which were short problem solving tasks integrated with instruction were assessed, and included a selected history of embedded tests (teaching machines, mathemagenic behaviors and study techniques, Keller's Personalized System of Instruction and mastery learning, and patient management problems and simulation exercise). A discussion on embedded performance tests for OSH short courses included the donning of oxygen generating self contained self rescuers, confined space hazard training (for mine safety), occupational respiratory protection training (conducted by NIOSH, with respirator components matching tests (RMT), pretests (RMT1), and posttests (RMT2), and multiple choice tests as measures), and the reliability and validity aspects of these tests. The author concludes that the embedded tests are useful to both instructors and course participants, and adds that they make OSH courses more effective.
