Iowa Occupational Safety and Health Training Program.

The goal of Occupational Heath and Safety Training Program at the University of Iowa was to contribute to disease and injury prevention in the industrial and agricultural sectors in Iowa and the region. Graduate training in industrial hygiene and residency training in occupational medicine were offered. During the time period in which this grant was in place, 11 students completed the masters of science program in industrial hygiene. There were two physicians completing their masters in Preventive Medicine and Environmental Health. One graduate student was enrolled in medical school. The total number of faculty grew from three to nine from 1982 to 1993. Faculty were added in related environmental health fields including ergonomics, environmental engineering, environmental analytical chemistry, environmental microbiology and toxicology. A significant broadening and strengthening of the program at the university occurred in industrial hygiene and occupational medicine.
