The Midwest Center for Occupational Health and Safety (MCOHS) was funded to serve education and training needs of occupational health and safety professionals in the midwestern part of the US. The MCOHS was located hierarchically in the Division of Environmental and Occupational Health in the School of Public Health at the University of Minnesota. Core programs were offered at this location in the fields of industrial hygiene, occupational health nursing, and occupational medicine. A comprehensive continuing education and outreach program was also offered. Details with statistics regarding attendees and graduates were provided for each of the following programs: continuing education and outreach, industrial hygiene, occupational health nursing, occupational injury prevention and safety, and occupational medicine. Over 300 courses were offered by the center which were attended by more than 7600 participants during the 5 years from 1987 through 1992. Specific programs cited included the annual occupational health and safety institute, the annual occupational health nursing symposium, hazardous substances training program, radiation protection, air analysis, ventilation systems, properties and behavior of airborne contaminants, and noise exposure.
